What should I do if I send ETH to ETC address by mistake

Although ETH (Ethereum) and ETC (Ethereum Classic) addresses may look the same in format (both starting with "0x"), they actually belong to two different blockchain networks. This means that even though the address formats are identical, the assets sent on one network (e.g., ETH) will not automatically appear on the other network (e.g., ETC). However, don’t worry! By following the steps outlined below, you can still recover the mistakenly sent funds.

Since both networks rely on the same cryptographic principles, you can export your ETC private key and import it into an ETH wallet. This will generate an ETH account with the same address as your ETC account, allowing you to recover the ETH funds mistakenly sent to the ETC address on the ETH network.

This works because the private key cryptographically controls the addresses on both networks. By importing the private key into an ETH wallet, you gain access to the funds on the ETH network, despite the confusion in the addresses.

Step 1: Get a hot wallet

You need to recover your account via seed phrase and passphrase (if set) on ELLIPAL app and get a hot wallet (which is connected to the internet).

  • Tap wallet icon-delete the original cold wallet-"Add Hot Wallet "-"Seed phrase";
  • Enter seed phrase, passphrase (if set), name and password-"Import Account";
  • You will get a hot wallet

    *Ensure the hot wallet address matches the original cold wallet address to access the correct account.

      Step 2: Export ETC private key

      • Tap wallet icon-gear icon;
      • Select "Export Private key"-enter password-select "ETC";
      • Copy private key and keep it secure.

        Step 3: Import ETC private key to an ETH Hot Wallet

        • Tap "Add Hot Wallet "-"Private key"-"ETH&ERC20 tokens";
        • Enter ETC private key, name and password-Tap "Import Account";
        • After creating the wallet, you should see the mistakenly sent ETH funds in this hot wallet. You can now transfer the funds to the correct ETH address to secure them.

        Step 4: Delete the hot wallet

        Once the transfer is complete, it’s important to delete the hot wallet to maintain security.

          After deleting the hot wallet, you can re-sync your original cold wallet account on the ELLIPAL app to ensure that your cold storage remains intact and secure.
